About the Hanse University Alliance

The Hanse University Alliance represents a diverse, sustainable and cooperative science region in the North and Baltic Sea area.

Together, we are developing a visible and future-orientated location for science and innovation – for the entire region, for Germany and for Europe.

We focus particularly on future-oriented topics such as sustainability, climate, energy, the ocean and health.

Our mission is to strengthen Northern Germany as a location for science and innovation through diverse collaborations and a close dialogue with the science policy.

Impuls Forschung programme

The Hanse University Alliance (HUA) supports the initiation, consolidation andexpansion of research collaborations between its member universities and provides financial support for this via the Impuls Forschung programme.

The aim of the programme is to initiate new interdisciplinary research networks, strengthen collaborative synergies in research, sharpen the HUAs research profile and make collaborative research more visible.

For a healthy future

The HUA members conduct research on infectious diseases, immune processes and zoonoses and develops innovative approaches in prevention and medical technology. The aim is to achieve fair, integrated healthcare system. Through interdisciplinary cooperation, HUA strengthens health research in the long term.

Rethinking energy

HUA brings together environmental, social and engineering sciences to develop sustainable and future-proof energy strategies. Climate-friendly technologies, resilient infrastructures and sustainable solutions for a liveable future are the focus.

Knowledge for the ocean

HUA is intensively engaged in exploring marine biodiversity, coastal dynamics and the blue bioeconomy. The aim is to gain a deep understanding of marine ecosystems and their importance for society – and to develop knowledge and technologies for resilient, sustainable maritime systems.

Shaping transformation

HUA is a pioneer in sustainability research. The alliance members develop practice-oriented and fair strategies for transformation by combining natural, social and economic sciences in an interdisciplinary way – finding solutions to real challenges.

Understanding climate futures

HUA investigates climate change in all its dimensions and its interactions with society. The aim is to develop strategies for the adaptation, de-carbonisation and strengthening of social resilience – with a particular attention to political dynamics and social transformation processes.
