It recognises excellent, cross-state research projects in the humanities and social sciences.

In 2016, the North German Science Award was given to the project Language Variation in Northern Germany (Sprachvariation in Norddeutschland, SiN).

The award winner is a cross-state team of scientists investigating the impact of environmental changes on the ecosystems of cold-water corals.
